SEI Fellow John Goodenough Named to ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Academy

August 7, 2026—John Goodenough, a Software Engineering Institute (SEI) fellow, is in the inaugural class of the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Software Engineering (ACM SIGSOFT) Software Engineering Academy. The standing body, launched July 14, honors those who have shaped modern software engineering.
SIGSOFT, a forum for professionals focused on software development and maintenance, named 80 software researchers, educators, and practitioners in the academy’s first cohort. New members will be elected annually from community nominations.
John Goodenough worked at the SEI at Carnegie Mellon University from 1986 until his retirement in 2011. He has since continued at the SEI part-time. His research includes rate monotonic analysis for real-time systems and assurance cases in large-scale systems of systems. Goodenough was also the SEI’s chief technical officer from 1996 to 2002. He is a fellow of the SEI as well as the ACM.
The SIGSOFT Software Engineering Academy also includes Mary Shaw, the SEI’s founding chief scientist and the current Alan J. Perlis University Professor of Computer Science in the Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science. Other honorees include several former SEI staff and visiting scientists.
