Abstract

From January through December 1998, the CERT/CC received 41,871 email messages and 1,001 hotline calls reporting computer security incidents or requesting information. We received 262 vulnerability reports and handled 3,734 computer security incidents during this period. More than 18,990 sites were affected by these incidents.

Some of the most serious intruder activities reported to the CERT/CC in 1998 were:

  • Growth and evolution of automated scanning tool
    This activity was reported throughout the year in a number of CERT/CC alerts (CA-97.26, CS-98.01, CS-98.03, CS-98.07, CS-98.08, IN98.01, IN-98.02, IN-98.04, IN-98.05, IN-98.06).
  • statd
    Reported by the CERT/CC in CA-97.26, statd activity is referenced in CS-98.01 and CS98.03
  • named
    Reported in CS-98.04 and CS-98.05.
  • mountd
    Activity around this vulnerability was noted in CA-98.12 and CS-98.08.
