A Message from the CTO
Andrew Carnegie, a founder of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), famously said, "My heart is in the work." This phrase is CMU’s motto and inspires our daily efforts at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) to advance the mission of our sponsors and customers. With deep understanding, insight, and persistence, CMU SEI continues to address the most important software engineering problems encountered by the Department of Defense (DoD) and deliver impactful solutions.
Throughout our 40-year history, CMU SEI has been dedicated to aligning DoD needs with current and emerging technological advances. Our areas of research have continued to evolve, spanning process improvement, software architecture and analysis, cybersecurity, cloud technology, systems of systems, and now the engineering of predictable, reliable, robust, and effective Artificial Intelligence (AI) into mission systems. Building on this legacy, the theme of this year’s CMU SEI Research Review, Crafting Connections, reflects our depth and breadth of research and our ability to pivot to meet sponsor needs.
At the 2024 Research Review, our team will share insights on how they are crafting connections through thought-provoking discussions, in-depth technical analyses, and explorations powered by human understanding and cutting-edge technology. The program highlights how CMU SEI researchers leverage collaborative expertise and continuously evolve to tackle the DoD’s toughest challenges. You’ll learn how our partnerships help rapidly transform ideas into action, and how our heart is always in the work.
Here, you’ll find selected projects from our portfolio of publicly releasable, DoD-sponsored research presented at the 2024 CMU SEI Research Review. These projects include recently concluded and ongoing efforts in our research pipeline designed to take innovations from concept to development, through collaborations with DoD, the U.S. Government (USG), academia, and the private sector.
I hope you enjoy reading about CMU SEI’s fiscal 2024 research efforts and that the following pages demonstrate the transformative impact of our work. We stand by to partner with you to help you make a difference, and we encourage you to reach out to us at info@sei.cmu.edu to learn more.
