Leading SAFe/Agile in Government

This 3 day live-delivery course enables attendees to understand basic Agile and lean concepts that developers use, but primarily focuses on introducing the interactions that government program offices can and should have with developers (either organic or contracted) who are using Agile team methods and the Scaled Agile Framework scaling approach to develop government systems. A combination of lecture, discussion, simulation, and short exercises are used to provide attendees with information that will translate into their work settings.

Who should attend?

Government staff who are (1) interacting with contractor SAFe/Agile teams or (2) are considering adoption of SAFe/Agile methods for their own work, or (3) have been told they will be interacting in an Agile enterprise. Development contractor staff who are interested in understanding how the government expects to interact in Agile development settings.

Topics

The course is intended to provide an overview of the following topics:

  • SAFe Principles and Application
  • Agile Basics: life cycles, Agile Manifesto, principles, methods, and practices
  • New Role for Government: Product Owner
  • Agile Insight and Oversight: technical reviews, requirements management, progress measurement
  • Release Planning & Execution using SAFe
  • SAFe Portfolio Management
  • Agile in the Larger Eco-System: systems engineering, contracting, testing, certification, OSD policy
  • Enabling an Agile Culture: models that support adoption, Readiness & Fit Analysis

Objectives

Attendees who complete the course should be able to:

  • Explain why Agile is not a "silver bullet" for government acquisition
  • List several areas of acquisition that are affected by the use of Agile methods and practices
  • Describe the major tenets and several of the principles of the Agile Manifesto
  • Describe the 9 SAFe principles
  • Discuss the key roles and events associated with SAFe release train standup and management
  • Describe key lean concepts associated with SAFe portfolio management
  • Discuss the benefits of small batch sizes in development environments

Prerequisites

This course has no prerequisites.

Materials

In addition to the lecture slides, participants receive hard copies of exercise materials and a reference poster.
