Pittsburgh, PA, August 31, 2009--The Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is pleased to announce the launch of a newly redesigned website that focuses on solutions for software engineering problems. The new site provides visitors with significant improvements in navigation, accessibility, and appearance.
The new site is the result of extensive analysis of surveys, web data, and searches on the SEI site and on search engines such as Google. Gary Snodgrass, manager of the SEI web communication team, said that the analysis, coupled with feedback from focus groups, revealed that the previous site's navigation was non-intuitive, making it difficult to find information.
The new site is leaner and easier for visitors to navigate. The new site contains 11 areas of SEI technical work as well as 6 solutions areas that include case studies describing how the SEI has helped organizations solve particular problems. Each page of a technical area includes related information about that topic, including technical reports and courses. Technical reports, presentations, webinars, and other SEI-related materials are now housed in a central library.
For instance, if a user is interested in topics related to software architecture, a search in the library for software architecture shows all related reports, presentations, books, and webinars. Each webpage for a library item lists the authors, the related SEI area(s) of work, a thumbnail of the item, and links to related documents.
"Previously, our documents and files were located through the site in multiple areas," said Snodgrass. "We brought all those materials together and organized them into a library of items." He added, "We implemented a content management system, and we developed an information framework that can be used across all the areas of work. That framework enables users to readily find information and materials on the website."
Although some high-level URLs will remain the same (such as http://www.sei.cmu.edu/cmmi), many URLs on the new site will change. The SEI is putting redirects in place to catch many URL changes, but visitors may need to search for pages that they have bookmarked in the old site.
